You won’t believe this case!
Many people are scared of dentists and gather bravery just before their teeth are falling apart. However, most people are not Angie Barlow of England.
Angie Barlow was terrified of going to the dentist because her mother learned she had throat cancer at a dental appointment. Losing her mom because of this disease left a scar so big that Barlow did not go to the dentist when her teeth started falling out, and instead reaffirmed them in her mouth with superglue for 10 years.
Angie said: “When the tooth comes out, I just put a little bit of glue and try to hold it in place to keep it…so I don’t have a gap in my teeth”.
The situation got so bad that the toxic chemicals in the superglue reportedly made her lose 90% of the bone supporting the teeth in her top jaw. In the end, dentists had to remove most of her teeth and insert 6 titanium pins into her skull to screw false teeth in order to transform her smile.
Barlow appears in a BBC Documentary, “The Truth About Your Teeth.” In it, she says she was so ashamed of her teeth that she held her hand over her mouth when she spoke. Serpil Djemal, a dental consultant at King’s College Hospital, said the case of DIY dentistry was one of the worst she had ever seen.
This DIY dentistry mistake can be used as an extreme example of what dental anxiety and phobia can make someone do. If you feel like you are dealing with a fear of attending the dentist or having a procedure, click here to see our Dental Anxiety issue.
